Delaware Mini Medical School Expansion

Founded in 2009, Delaware Mini Medical School is produced in partnership with area hospitals and federally qualified health centers and the Sussex County Health Coalition. Funds from the State of Delaware, American Rescue Plan, underwrite the expansion of this program from twice a year to seven times a year.

Research conducted by the Academy in the summer and fall of 2022, and updated in the summer of 2024, shows that Delaware has several programs that encourage youth to pursue a career in healthcare, including our own Delaware Mini Medical School.  This research is highlighted in the following PDF document: An Environmental Scan of Healthcare Pathways Programs in Delaware.

A component of the Delaware Health Force strategy is to reach out to youth, especially those in areas disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, encouraging young minds to consider an educational path that leads them to a career in the health sciences.

To implement this strategy, we have customized the curriculum and goals of Delaware Mini Medical School to focus on middle, junior, high school, and undergraduate students.

Graduates of this six-week series who attend all live sessions receive a signed certificate and are eligible to become members of our new Delaware Youth Medical Academy after composing a reflection paper on their learned experience.
